Over the weekend, Storm Darragh brought fierce winds and heavy rain to Newquay Cornwall, causing chaos and damage across the region. I received a few emergency call outs, but two, in particular, stood out.

One involved a couple trapped inside their house!
They had previously had some work done on their door, but it hadn't been done properly. The door had dropped and was rattling badly in the wind. This, along with poor do maintenance, caused the latch to jam, preventing them from opening the door! They were understandably panicked, with the storm raging outside and no way to get out.
They were trapped inside!
You might think, why is this a problem 🤔? They are in their house, after all.
But what if they needed to leave in an emergency? What then...?
Luckily, they called me, and I was able to get there quickly despite the challenging conditions, traveling all the way from Truro to Newquay. When I arrived, the wind was howling, and I could see a fence had already blown down in their garden. Their front door was practically shaking in its frame!
I immediately started assessing the situation. I checked the handle to see if the locking mechanism was working correctly, which was tricky with all the wind noise. It seemed to be fine, and the multipoint locking system – the series of bolts that secure the door at multiple points – was disengaged. I then checked the door; it had dropped. I checked the hinges, which were straining under the weight of the door. It was clear that the door had taken a beating from the wind.
Since I couldn't open the door to get to the hinges, I had to find another way in. I spotted a small window on the side of the house and, with the homeowner's permission, carefully climbed through. It was a bit of a squeeze, and the wind was buffeting me, but I managed to get inside! Once I was in, I was able to adjust the hinges, but that didn't solve the problem. The door still wouldn't open.
I removed the handles to take a look inside, and a bolt fell to the floor. Where on earth did that come from?! I thought. Back outside I went, and using a latch opening tool, I ran it along the inside of the door. Boom! It was the latch! With some gentle persuasion, the door finally opened! The latch had lost its bolt and become jammed. The deadbolt was stiffer than the fence in the wind!
I serviced the door, lubricating the moving parts, tightening the screws, and realigning the strike plate, making sure everything was working correctly.
This situation highlights how important it is to have your doors and windows in good working order, especially before a storm hits. I can only recommmend you have your door serviced! Thats right, your door needs a service!
